This might not be the place to praise a set that takes shows off IA; but I have listened to the first show form this set (5/11/77) and I was surprised how good this sounds . A few "oddities" , Keith is glued far left, and a little flat sounding, compared to the "ax-men" who sound almost 3d in the sound field . The vocal levels vary, and have that "echo" you hear on some of the tapes from this period, like the Cornell SB ( does anyone know if that is mikes picking up the hall, or an effect added at the soundboard ?) . Considering this show comes from 2-track "unmixable" tapes, it is amazing and a tribute to the art of the taper (Betty?)
Anyone gone further in the set ?.
Has anyone gone for the "official download" option ? I wish they would have offered a 24-bit option, maybe in future to get me to pony up for shit I already own !

Of the shows I've listened to so far (parts of all but 5-12), I noticed the vocal reverb most on 5-11. For me, Spring 77 sound is sweet but with more hall reverberation than previous years. I think the noise canceling mikes used in 73-74 reduced that, and I think they were playing in smaller halls in 76 than in 77.

I burned one CD from the files of a friend who got the downloads, and in WMP10 it didn't show as being HDCD, while the original CDs as well as copies I made of them both show as being HDCD. That's strange as the FLAC files provided through the download series of old produced HDCD CDs. This won't affect most people's experience of the downloads, but I figured I'd mention it because it's weird. Could they have made not one but two bonehead mistakes with the download files?

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: The sound is remarkable

Dudley - The official D/L was a nightmare tagging wise, and there were even mislabeled tracks - straight from Rhino. My buddy who bought the D/L was pissed. He spent 2 hours separating the tracks into individual shows and then tagging them properly by show, song, and track order. He initially tried to just convert them from FLAC and put them right into iTunes - BIG mistake.

Is it too much to ask a record company to at least tag a limited edition box set correctly for Christ's sake? One hundred dollar Download all fucked up tag-wise.

Anyhow, he got it all straight and the sound is phenomenal. I think any sound guy could get great sound outta the equipment they were using at the time. They started using that "Living room Concert sound" from FM Sound starting sometime in '76 They used those HUGE horn loaded Gauss drivers and straight tube amps for all the high end shit. The end result was crystal clear highs with thundering bass. So many people talk about how that particular system was incredible to hear live indoors. I think it also accounts for some of the reverb you hear in so many '77 shows. Just a guess, because if you saw the size of some of those bigger drivers, they were like 5'x6'

The sound of these new releases are truly incredible. I don't know much about Plangent Processes, but they seem to be handling all of the new stuff lately(including the upcoming Sunshine Daydream) with very good reason. I think they are doing the transfers and then Norman is doing the mastering, but I'm not sure. Apparently, they have the best playback system in the business right now for magnetic tape and film. I would agree that their technology is as good as it gets right now, just judging on the incredible clarity of the sound of this box.

Long story short, this release has remarkable sound, even as an official D/L.

EDIT: here's a shot of those Gauss drivers sometime in late '76.

Here is a shot I just found looking around that popped up on google stating it's Spring '77. You can see the size of the drivers well and how much space they took up in relation to the stage and the size of the venue. Friggin' awesome.

Check this one out. It's Englishtown and you can see the drivers on those delay towers - becasue the crowd was so freakin' huge and without them the sound would dissipate badly on a racetrack like that, being flat as hell and all.

Awesome, basic speed of sound type stuff, '77 style.....

I agree that the 5-11 show sounds great and has a lot of reverb in the vocals. I've always felt it was mostly the setup they had that tour in terms of speakers, mic placement combination, etc. They played the same venues in other years and none had that reverb at that point. Just one of the things that makes that tour so distinctive - in addition to the wonderful playing!

I have listened to a little over half the box. I haven't listened to 5-15 and part of 5-17. Overall I think the sound is fantastic although one of the shows, 5-12 is a little bit weaker than the the others i have listened to. I was blown away by the sound on 5-11 since i was not familiar with that show. 5-17 also sounds fantastic, but i expected this as the circulating versions sounded great as well and it is one of my favorite shows of the month.

I went for the discs. Sounds like the downloads were problematic as none were tagged, but i assume the sound is fine.
